Young shooters take AIM
Several young locals displayed their trap shooting talents recently in Sparta.
Members of the Waterloo Lead Heads youth shooting club participated in the Academic Integrity Marksmanship tournament July 25-29 at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex.
Issac Ballard, Breck Rohlfing, Jaxson Ostertag, Gavin Kloth, Colton Glessner, Kinleigh Cannon and Morgan Hoeffken competed for the Lead Heads.
In the ages 11 and under division, Rohlfing, Ballard, Ostertag and Glessner placed fifth in sporting clay shooting.
Rohlfing was also a member of the Southern Illinois 11 and under All-Star Team which finished second with a score of 900 out of 1,000. Rohlfing shot 175 out of 200 sporting clays in the team effort.
The ages 11 and under Class C team of Lead Heads Cannon, Ballard, Hoeffken, Glessner and Ostertag placed third at the tourney with a score of 749 out of 1,000.
Another local participant at the AIM event in Sparta was Columbia High School junior-to-be Colton Aguiar.
He shot a 99 out of 100 in the handicap event (20 yards instead of 16 yards) and ultimately placed fifth in his division.
Aguiar has been swimming competitively since he was 5 and placed sixth in the backstroke at the IHSA state sectional meet this past spring.
However, he’s only been shooting trap competitively for 18 months.
