Wilhelm throws 9-inning no-hitter for Eagles

Brendan Wilhelm

Columbia pitcher Brendan Wilhelm had a game for the ages Thursday in Carlyle, throwing a nine-inning no-hitter. In fact, he had a perfect game through seven and two-thirds innings for the high-flying Eagles and only needed 91 pitches to complete his mound masterpiece.

Jacob Hill hit a two-out, three-run triple to break a scoreless tie in the top of the ninth inning as Columbia defeated Cahokia Conference foe Carlyle, 3-0.

“Wow, best pitching performance I’ve ever seen,” teammate JT Broshears posted on Twitter.

Broshears threw a no-hitter of his own earlier this season.

Columbia head coach Keith Jany had high praise for his senior right-handed mound ace.

“(I’m) not sure if I’ve seen a better pitching performance at the high school level,” Jany told the Republic-Times on Thursday night.

Carlyle had one baserunner all game with a two-out walk in the eighth after the two teams went into extra innings in a scoreless tie. But catcher Chris Wagner erased that lone Carlyle runner trying to steal.

Wilhelm had nine strikeouts in the win, which improved the Eagles to 11-4 on the season.

“The defense played well behind him, we just had a hard time scraping across a run,” Jany said. “He threw very efficiently and pounded the strike zone. It was great to finally score for him in the ninth and get him a ‘W’ for his masterpiece.”
