WHS athletes among all-conference selections
Fall sports teams at Waterloo High School enjoyed success in 2014, with the soccer team winning a regional title, the football team reaching the playoffs and cross country runners making state.
Here’s a list of Waterloo student-athletes who were named Mississippi Valley Conference all-conference selections in their respective sports.
Football
Those making first team all-MVC were running back Rick Wiegand (1,118 yards rushing with 14 touchdowns, 228 yards receiving), offensive guard Zack Shields, defensive lineman Zach George (37 tackles, four sacks), defensive back Kerstan Panzau (four interceptions) and punter Mitch Gladney (38.7 yards per punt average).
George and Gladney also made second team all-MVC, George as an offensive tackle and Gladney as tight end. Also on the second team are defensive lineman Cole Milam, linebacker Sam Dodd and defensive back Brad Lathrop.
There were three Bulldogs selected as honorable mentions to the all-conference team: center Blake Pete, kicker Ryan Aycock and senior honorable mention Nick Iorio.
Volleyball
The WHS volleyball squad was represented by seniors Kelsey Hamann and Mia Reed on the all-MVC first team. Hamann scored 150 points and had 467 assists this fall. Reed had 57 blocks and 117 kills.
Making the second team were seniors Kylie Albrecht and Mallory Scharf.
Honorable mention players from Waterloo were Kathryn Finnerty and Emelia Modglin.
Soccer
The Bulldogs soccer program enjoyed a successful 2014 campaign, and three of their key players made first team allconference.
Kane Osterhage led the team with 17 goals. Tyler Begis scored 12 goals with nine assists this season. They were joined on the first team by Dalton Berg.
Making second team all-MVC were Jared Goessling, Cole Kaiping and Clay Metz.
Adam Shelby made honorable mention all-conference.
Golf
Waterloo boys golfers Colin and Chase Whelan were both named first team all-conference.
For WHS girls golf, Haley Faus and Kaitlyn Storm made first team all-MVC.
Cross country
The WHS boys cross country team was well-represented on the all-conference first team, with state medalist Lance Mueller, Cole Rodenberg, Will Zeisset and Joe Daab making the list.
Whitney Liefer made the all-MVC first team for the girls team.
Girls tennis
Megan Molinari was named second team all-conference for the Bulldogs, with Jessica Molinari and Brittany Prange named honorable mention all-MVC.
