Weilbacher leads Columbia softball to sectional title

The Columbia High School softball team poses with its sectional championship plaque Saturday in Centralia.

It was the Brianna Weilbacher show once again. Fresh off a dominant performance on the mound and at the plate Thursday against Highland in the sectional semifinal, Weilbacher twirled a no-hitter and smacked a solo home run as the Eagles won the Class 3A Centralia Sectional championship against Centralia on Saturday, 1-0.

Weilbacher, who will play for Iowa State University next spring, has thrown multiple no-hitters this season and also leads the team in home runs. She hit her 15th homer of the spring in the sixth inning, which broke a scoreless tie. She is hitting .504 this season.

Rachel Garcia just missed a home run in the second inning, settling instead for a double off the top of the fence.

The Eagles improved to 34-2 on the season, and Weilbacher improved to 29-1 on the mound.

With the win, head coach Rhonda Major’s squad advances to Monday’s Mattoon Supersectional against Chatham Glenwood. First pitch is at 4:30 p.m.
