Waterloo wins baseball, softball regional titles

It was a magical Monday for the Waterloo High School baseball and softball teams, as both won regional championships.

In a heavily anticipated local match-up that drew a crowd that lined all around the outfield fence of Waterloo’s softball field, the Bulldogs battled back from 6-0 and 8-3 deficits to stun Columbia with a 9-8 win at home. Kaitlyn Storm smashed a leadoff home run in the seventh to break an 8-8 tie and send Bulldogs fans into a frenzy.

The softball ‘Dogs will next play Mater Dei in the Class 3A Mascoutah Sectional at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Not to be outdone, the Waterloo baseball team defeated host team Freeburg, 5-3, on Monday to also win a regional title. Starting pitcher Corey Vogel was masterful on the mound for much of the game and Noah Thaggard closed the door at the end for the save.

The baseball ‘Dogs will now play conference rival Highland in the Class 3A Salem Sectional at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
