A Waterloo teen is charged with multiple felonies after it is alleged he burglarized a vehicle in town late last month and used a forged check obtained during that crime at a local gas station.

Waterloo police sought assistance from the public earlier this week in identifying the individual, releasing a photo captured from video surveillance. Several leads came in to the department, and the suspect was identified as Michael S. Upchurch, 19, of Waterloo.

On Tuesday, police arrested Upchurch on felony charges of burglary to motor vehicle and forgery. Court information alleges that on Aug. 30, Upchurch unlawfully entered a truck in the area of 4705 Vandebrook Drive. Using a check stolen from inside this truck, Upchurch allegedly forged a signature to pass a check for $60 at Wayne’s One Stop in Waterloo on Aug. 31.

A number of car break-ins were reported in the Vandebrook area during that time, police said, but Upchurch has not yet been tied to anything other than the one burglary to this point.

Upchurch posted bond and was released from county jail with a preliminary hearing date of Oct. 9 set.

“If anyone has more information reference this case or others, please contact Detective Jeff Prosise at the police department at 939-3377,” Waterloo Police Chief Jim Trantham said.
