The Triad Knights gave Waterloo plenty of chances to pull off a big conference victory on Friday night, but the Bulldogs couldn’t capitalize on Triad’s mistakes and lost their third straight game.
The Knights defense rose to the occasion after their offense gave the ‘Dogs great field position several times on turnovers, and Triad held on for a 28-14 win over Waterloo.
Triad took the opening drive of the game 65 yards to take an early 7-0 lead.
Waterloo answered on its first possession, going 80 yards to tie the game at 7-7 on a 3-yard touchdown run by Nick Iorio.
The Knights scored again on their next possession, set up by a good kick return that saw them start the drive at Waterloo’s 47. They led 14-7 with 55 seconds left in the first quarter.
Waterloo couldn’t get going on offense in the second quarter, and Triad missed two field goals in the quarter. The score remained 14-7 at the half.
The ‘Dogs again caught a break early in the third quarter when the Knights fumbled a punt and Waterloo recovered at Triad’s 16, but they just could not find the end zone.
Triad scored on its next possession to open up a 21-7 lead.
The Knights gave Waterloo the ball deep in their own territory after a fumble, but Waterloo was stopped again by the Triad defense as the third quarter came to a close.
Following a third turnover by Triad deep in their own end, Waterloo finally found the end zone on a Rick Wiegand 4-yard run that cut the Knights lead to 21-14.
Triad added a score late in the quarter to take the game, 28-14.
Waterloo (5-3) closes its regular season at Mater Dei next Friday.
