Warriors win SLABA title
The Waterloo Warriors 18U baseball squad wrapped up the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association playoffs with a convincing win Thursday night over Chaminade to take the league title.
The Warriors won game one last Monday but lost game two to Chaminade last Wednesday. On Thursday, a deciding game three resulted in a 12-2 win for Waterloo at Maryville University in St. Louis.
Jack Roessler drove in four runs on two hits, and Nolan Veto picked up the pitching win for the Warriors.
Waterloo jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Hudson Blank hit a sacrifice fly that scored one run. Roessler’s doubled scored two more, and Ty Frierdich singled to score another run.
The Warriors extended their early lead with four runs in the bottom of the second thanks to RBI singles by Brady Biffar, Chase Castello and Frierdich.
Veto allowed six hits and two runs (one earned) over five innings, striking out seven and walking four.
The Warriors, coached by John Green, finished with an overall record of 15-2 – including a 2-1 mark in the postseason tournament.
In addition to two hits from Roessler, the Warriors also got two hits each from Kaleb Buechler, Frierdich and Biffar.
Biffar, a 2024 Gibault Catholic High School graduate, was named SLABA 18U League MVP.
Roessler, a 2024 Waterloo High School grad, was selected as the SLABA 18U League Pitcher of the Year.
