Volleyballers aim to survive and advance
It’s win or go home for local high school volleyball squads playing in regional tournaments this week.
Waterloo (23-12) opened Class 3A Herrin Regional play Tuesday night against Marion, winning in two sets.
The regional final takes place Thursday night, with Waterloo facing Carbondale for a berth in the Salem Sectional on Tuesday.
Waterloo ended its regular season last Tuesday with a 25-15, 25-21 victory over Highland. Megan Huebner finished with nine kills and Ellie Day recorded 21 assists to lead Waterloo.
Columbia (29-6) opened Class 2A regional play on its home court Tuesday night, taking on Red Bud. The result was a two-set victory for the Eagles, who will next face Nashville in Thursday’s regional final.
The winner of this regional advances to Tuesday’s Staunton Sectional.
Columbia clinched the Mississippi Division of the Cahokia Conference with a 25-21, 25-19 win over Freeburg on Thursday. Claire Sandstrom had 10 kills and Megan Bolyard had 13 assists for the Eagles.
In Class 1A, Valmeyer and Gibault are competing in the Metro East Lutheran Regional.
Valmeyer (6-25) opened regional play Monday with a 25-17, 25-23 win over Metro East Lutheran. The Pirates now face Father McGivney on Wednesday for a berth in Thursday’s regional final.
Valmeyer lost in two sets to Father McGivney on Friday to conclude the regular season. On Thursday, the Pirates won in two sets over Lebanon.
Gibault (10-19) battled Madison in the regional on Tuesday, winning 25-9, 25-1. The Hawks lost in three sets to Freeburg last Tuesday and in two sets to Althoff last Wednesday to end the regular season.
Dupo (5-21) lost to Patoka on Tuesday in the regional. Gibault and Patoka face each other Wednesday for a berth in the regional final.
The winner of this regional advances to Tuesday’s Farina Sectional.
Dupo concluded its regular season with a two-set loss last Wednesday to Steeleville.
