USPS explains winter storm mail delivery

The U.S. Postal Service offered comment Thursday on local mail delivery this week in the wake of the recent winter storm.

“Carriers have been delivering where and when they can get access to the street and/or the mailbox. Carrier safety is a priority,” USPS Gateway District spokesperson Valerie Welsch said. “Customers are encouraged to clear the path to the mailbox on the house or the curbside box. If the carrier feels it is unsafe, they are not required to make delivery.”

Mail customers who cannot clear snow and ice from the path to their mailbox can make arrangements to pick up the mail at the local post office, Welsch said.
