Ups and downs for softballers

As the old sports saying goes, “you win some and you lose some.”

The key is not to get too high with the wins or too low with the losses.

Waterloo (15-4) had lost three straight after enjoying a 13-game winning streak, but rebounded with a convincing win Wednesday.

The Bulldogs blasted Civic Memorial on Wednesday, 12-0. Raelyn Melching went 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs. Maddie Gummersheimer went 3-for-3 with a home run.

On Monday, Waterloo suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of conference foe Highland. Gummersheimer went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Mia Miller struck out nine in a solid pitching effort.

On Saturday, Waterloo lost 4-0 to Freeburg and 5-4 to Gillespie. The Bulldogs were held to just two hits – both by Samantha Juelfs – and Freeburg scored two unearned runs in the first game. Against Gillespie, Waterloo led 4-2 after five innings but fell apart late. Gummersheimer went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

On Friday, it was a 4-0 victory for the ‘Dogs over a tough Red Bud squad. Mallory Thompson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Miller recorded 12 strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings. 

This past Thursday, Waterloo won 15-0 over Gibault as Juelfs collected three hits and Thompson had two hits with two RBIs.

Last Tuesday, the ‘Dogs won 8-1 over Mascoutah. Aidan Dintelman picked up the pitching win, Thompson and Juelfs each had two hits, and Gummersheimer drove in three runs. 

Waterloo plays Saturday at Valmeyer and Monday at Jerseyville. 

Raelyn Melching leads the offense with a .500 average to go along with five home runs, seven doubles and 28 RBIs. Gummersheimer is at .420 with 14 RBIs.

Miller is 8-3 with a 0.87 ERA and 125 strikeouts in 64 and one-third innings. 

Dintelman is 5-1 with a 1.01 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 41 and two-thirds innings.

Columbia (14-6) has won four of its past six games. 

On Monday, it was a 6-1 loss at the hands of Red Bud. The Eagles were held to just one hit and struck out 13 times.

Columbia won twice against O’Fallon on Saturday, 19-6 and 8-2.

On Friday, it was a 10-6 victory at Granite City. 

On Thursday, the Eagles suffered a 9-2 loss to Freeburg. Columbia was held to four hits, including a two-run homer off the bat of Reagan Mathews. 

Last Tuesday, Emily Webb pitched an 11-strikeout no-hitter, and Jaylyn Brister went 3-for-3 with three RBIs – including her 100th career hit – in a 7-0 blanking of Roxana. 

Columbia hosts Breese Central on Thursday and Gibault on Friday. 

Elle van Breusegen leads the Eagles offense at .545 with 23 runs, followed by Paige Froess at .442 with 16 RBIs, Brister at .404 with 21 RBIs, and Mathews at .400 with three home runs and nine RBIs.

Webb is 4-1 in the pitching circle with a 0.42 ERA. 

Valmeyer (8-3) won five recent games. 

On Wednesday, the Pirates won 8-2 over Gibault.

On Tuesday, it was a 5-0 victory for Valmeyer over New Athens. Brooke Miller homered and struck out 14 in a three-hit shutout. Mia McSchooler went 3-for-4.

On Saturday, the Pirates picked up a 5-3 victory over Christ Our Rock Lutheran. Miller went 2-for-4 with two runs, and Rylee Nagel drove in two while also earning the pitching win. 

On Friday, it was a 19-4 win for Valmeyer over Bunker Hill. Miller and McSchooler each collected four hits, with McSchooler driving in five runs. Madilyn Huddleston earned the pitching win. 

Last Tuesday, Valmeyer won 6-0 over Dupo. Miller went 3-for-4 with a home run and also struck out 13 in a two-hit pitching performance. Alex Deluca and Avery Proffer each added two hits. 

The Pirates play Thursday at Sparta before hosting Waterloo this Saturday. 

Miller is hitting .513 with three homers and 19 runs. She has a 1.39 ERA in the pitching circle. 

Payton Similey is hitting .417 this spring. 

Gibault (4-9) lost 17-6 on Monday to Wesclin, which was preceded by a 15-0 loss Thursday to Waterloo. 

In Wednesday’s loss to Valmeyer, Karina Jerkatis collected two hits for the Hawks.

Libby Mesch is hitting .588 with two homers and eight RBIs to lead the Hawks. Ashley Murphy is hitting .462 with four doubles and eight RBIs.

Dupo (1-8) lost 6-3 to Marissa on Tuesday despite a homer off the bat of Maddie Ehrhard.

The Tigers lost 20-4 at Gillespie last Wednesday. Kaitlyn Roberts went 2-for-2, and Lily McMannis continued her solid spring with a hit and two RBIs.

Ehrhard leads Dupo in hitting at .409 with 10 RBIs. McMannis is hitting .389.

Dupo hosts New Athens on Monday.
