Tracksters on the run this spring

Local high school track and field athletes are posting strong numbers so far this spring.  

The Waterloo High School boys and girls track squads were in action Friday. 

The WHS girls competed at the O’Fallon Invite, with Cameron Crump winning the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:19.25. 

Other top finishers included Angelynn Kanyuck placing first and Danielle Mudd placing second in the 3,200 meter run. Kanyuck’s time was 11:38.37; Mudd’s time was 11:40.88.

Kristin Smith placed second in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:01.97. 

Ellie Zweigart took third in the long jump. Isabel Gregson placed third in the discus.

The WHS boys competed in the Mascoutah Military Classic on Friday. 

Among the notable showings included Chris Pete placing third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.10 seconds. 

Kyle Kern placed third in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 4:30.99.

Tyler Devilder placed second in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 10:09.50.

The WHS boys competed in the Norm Armstrong Invite at Belleville West on April 6 with other athletes from 36 schools. 

Pete set new school records in the 100 meter and 200 meter runs with times of 11.06 seconds and 22.54 seconds, respectively. 

Kern placed fourth in the 1,600 meter run. 

The WHS girls participated April 5 in the Lady Knight Invite at Triad High School. 

Kanyuck won the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:17.13, with Mudd placing fourth at 5:21.11.

Crump won the 3,200 meter run with a time of 11:08.48, with Ava Rau placing fifth at 11:34.61.

Smith placed fourth in both the long jump and 400 meter run.

Athletes from Columbia and Valmeyer high schools competed in the Keith Hall Invitational at Wesclin High School on Saturday. 

For the boys, Columbia’s Christian Kronk won the 110 meter hurdles (15.52 seconds), 300 meter hurdles (40.67 seconds) and triple jump. 

Columbia’s Ethan Hogan won both the 800 meter and 1,600 meter races with times of 2:01.65 and 4:29.93, respectively.

Other first place showings for the Columbia boys included its 4×800 meter relay team and Chase Hendrickson in the discus. 

Valmeyer’s Landon Roy won the 100 meter dash in 11.75 seconds. 

For the Columbia girls, Carly Chambers won the 3,200 meter run with a time of 13:53.90. 

Valmeyer’s Ava McClellan placed second in the long jump. 

A meet involving area small schools took place April 9 in Red Bud, with Valmeyer and Dupo athletes among several schools participating. 

McClellan won the girls long jump for Valmeyer with a distance of 15 feet, nine inches.

Valmeyer’s Autumn Lewis won the 400 meter run with a time of 1:04.44 and placed second in the 200 meter race.

Also faring well for Valmeyer was Oscar Hoerr, who placed third in the boys 400 meter run. 

For Dupo, Keith West won the triple jump with a distance of 38 feet, eight inches and placed second in the 1,600 meter run. 

Dupo’s Allison Taylor placed second in both the discus and shot put. 

On April 8, Columbia, Valmeyer and Gibault athletes competed in the Wiseman/Henning Invite at Freeburg. 

Columbia’s Hogan again won the 800 meter run with a time of 1:58.94.

Also for Columbia, Kronk won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.12 seconds and the 300 meter hurdles at 41.39 seconds. 

Jase Nelson won the triple jump for the Eagles at 41 feet, 9.25 inches. 

Columbia’s boys 4×800 meter relay team won with a time of 9:15.18.

In the girls meet, Valmeyer’s McClellan placed third in the long jump.
