State Bank to expand into Columbia soon
State Bank of Waterloo announced plans to expand its facilities into Columbia.
“We thought Columbia was a nice community for us,” bank president Kevin Day said. “It just made sense.”
The lot they are pursuing is off North Main Street. It had been the site of a Hardee’s that was destroyed by fire years ago and has been sitting empty ever since.
“We like that it has good visibility and it’s right next to Route 3,” Day said.
But it isn’t a done deal yet.
The lot, owned by Columbia resident Herb Schueler, must pass a series of hurdles before State Bank can commit to building its newest branch there.
First, it had to be rezoned to allow for a financial institution. That happened at the June 22 Columbia City Council meeting.
Next, the property will be subject to an environmental study.
“We suspect there may have been an issue with a potential fuel leak near the property,” Day said.
If the land is cleared, the developer will likely pursue variances from the city on elements that could include building materials, signage and parking.
Day stressed that expanding State Bank into Columbia makes sense not only for the bank, but also the city.
“This certainly is a chance for the city to take the land that is non-productive and get some tax money out of it,” he said.
The bank also plans to continue and expand its efforts of community involvement in their new community.
While nothing is certain about the location, Day emphasized his bank’s intentions to build its newest branch in Columbia.
“We’re moving that direction, that’s our intention, but a lot of things have to fall into place first,” Day said. “And if they don’t, we’ll find another home (there).”
State Bank currently has two branches in Waterloo and one in Valmeyer.
