The Republic-Times Team of the Week is the St. Louis SLAM of the Women’s Football Alliance. The SLAM, featuring Waterloo natives Jamie Skinner and Jennifer (Conway) Pickett (inset photos), won the league championship in thrilling fashion on July 27, 30-27 over the Boston Renegades in Canton, Ohio. It was the fifth league title for the SLAM, which plays its home games at St. Mary’s High School in St. Louis. Skinner, a longtime member of the team, played safety and wide receive this season for the undefeated SLAM. Pickett, a former Waterloo High School basketball standout, was a rookie offensive lineman for the SLAM who went down with an injury early in the season.
