Spring election process starting

Illinoisans anticipate a lot of excitement for the upcoming November elections with county, state and national candidates running for office.

But just over the horizon are the municipal elections, which take place April 4, 2017. The first day to circulate petition packets to file as candidates for city council, school board and park and road district offices is Tuesday, Sept. 20.

After that, the dates to file completed petitions are Dec. 12-19. Those interested in circulating petitions for village board or city council may pick up forms at their respective city halls.

The Waterloo Park District office will hand out and collect petitions for park district commissioner seats. To pick up petition materials for Columbia, Valmeyer and Waterloo school board, residents need to go to the Monroe County Clerk’s Office inside the courthouse.

For the road districts, interested parties would pick up and file petitions with the clerk of that specific road district.

Waterloo has four aldermanic seats up for election. These include Russell Thomas (Ward 1), Rita Trantham (Ward 2), Gerry Frederick (Ward 3) and Vicki Koerber (Ward 4). Koerber is currently running for county board.

Terms expiring for the Waterloo School Board include those of Steve Wheat (Township 3-10), Dwight Boehm (Township 3-10) and Johnny Caupert (Township 2-10). Not more than three school board members may be selected from any one congressional township and no more board members can be seated from Township 2-9.

On the Waterloo Park District Board, commissioners Joann Harlin, Ken Niemann and Keith Buettner are up for re-election.
