Arrest in domestic incident with police pursuit

Multiple law enforcement agencies participated in the pursuit of a suspect in connection with a domestic incident in Waterloo early Sunday afternoon.

The suspect vehicle was a red sedan. It was followed by Waterloo, Columbia and Monroe County Sheriff’s Department police units north on Route 3 and then east on Route 158 into Millstadt. The vehicle was ultimately stopped at Lee’s Home Center on South Illinois Street.

Waterloo police said the incident began shortly before 12:45 p.m. at an apartment in the 600 block of South Church Street.

Charged in the case is Kyle D. Johnson, 19, of Waterloo, with aggravated domestic battery (strangle), unlawful restraint, aggravated fleeing/eluding police, and aggravated battery of a police officer.

The domestic battery charge alleges that Johnson strangled a female victim, that being his girlfriend. The unlawful restraint charge alleges he detained the girlfriend and another woman in that while being asked to leave, he “held a steak knife and refused to permit” them to seek police assistance.

The resulting police pursuit involved speeds of 21-plus miles per hour over the speed limit, court documents allege. Johnson is also alleged to have “spit on the arm” of a Columbia police officer in the incident.

A conditions of release hearing took place for Johnson on Monday afternoon at the Monroe County Courthouse.
