Man injured in tractor rollover near Waterloo

A man is recovering from broken bones and other injuries sustained when the tractor he was driving in the 3600 block of State Route 156 near Trout Camp Road just west of Waterloo rolled over, pinning him underneath about 7:50 p.m. Saturday.

John Toenjes was airlifted by Survival Flight medical helicopter to a St. Louis hospital for treatment of injuries not considered to be life-threatening.

Waterloo Fire Department personnel assisted Monroe County EMS at the accident scene.

“We assisted in stabilizing the tractor, getting the patient onto a backboard and into the ambulance to move him to the landing zone that we established in the front yard,” Waterloo Fire Chief Brett Wiegand told the Republic-Times. “Survival Flight landed a few minutes after the patient was moved from the rear of the property to the driveway near the house.”

Wiegand said Toenjes was working on the property behind his house when the tractor rolled, throwing him off and underneath the tractor. The tractor was on its side when emergency personnel arrived.

“More than likely the ground was soft, causing the tractor to shift and roll,” Wiegand said. “It was an unfortunate situation, but we hope that the homeowner is able to recover from the injuries sustained very soon.”
