Louis Hutchin “Hutch” Schlafly, 71, of Columbia, died Dec. 10, 2015.
He was born June 11, 1944, son of the late Paul A. and Alberta Jane Schlafly (nee Hutchin).
Mr. Schlafly was the chairman of the board of directors of Columbia National Bank, Columbia, a bank he and a group of investors established in 1976. He served as president of the bank until his retirement in 1997. He began his banking career in 1966 at Union National Bank, East St. Louis.
He was a past president of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, member of the East St. Louis, then Columbia Rotary since 1966, and member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Columbia.
“Hutch” was a 1962 graduate of Saint Louis University High School and Rockhurst College Class of 1966.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Gracia L. Schlafly (nee Doswald) of Columbia; son Aaron (Vivien) Schlafly of Tokyo, Japan; daughter Jane (Justin) Kernen of Austin, Texas; and grandchildren Brian Louis Schlafly and Zelda Grace Kernen; along with other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Paul A. Schlafly Jr., and sister Elizabeth Jane McReynolds.
Visitation is Saturday, Dec. 19, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Columbia.
A memorial Mass will be Dec. 19, at 10:30 a.m., at the church, Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating.
Mr. Schlafly had gifted his remains to Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis.
