Columbia, Gibault and Waterloo showed this weekend why there’s been a hotbed of volleyball action this fall in Monroe County.

The Eagles won the Monster Smash tournament at Breese Central on Saturday, having to defeat Waterloo and Gibault to do so.

The Bulldogs and Hawks also fared well in the tourney, each winning three of four matches.

Columbia (27-4) topped Teutopolis and Freeburg in addition to the wins over local rivals.

The Eagles followed up their tourney win by posting an impressive 25-21, 25-22 victory Monday night at home against highly touted O’Fallon.

Gibault (19-9) defeated Breese Central, Collinsville and Nashville before falling to Columbia in the tourney final on Saturday. On Monday, Gibault got back in the win column with a two-set victory at home over Valmeyer.

Waterloo (15-10) won against Freeburg, Teutopolis and Breese Central in the tourney and are still standing tall in the Mississippi Valley Conference. The Bulldogs wrapped up MVC play Tuesday night at Highland.

In other local volleyball action, the Valmeyer Pirates (20-10) hosted their annual “Volley for the Cure” match against Dupo on Thursday, wearing special pink-colored uniforms in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Pirates defeated the Tigers in two sets.

Valmeyer hosted Steeleville for its senior night on Tuesday and will play at Lebanon on Thursday.

Dupo (11-15-1) hosted New Athens on Tuesday following Thursday’s loss at Valmeyer.
