Local man starts own plumbing business

As people age, a problem they may face at some point is taking a bath or shower – comfortably and safely, without fear of falling or other injuries.

Solving that challenge is one Nathan Hirsch especially appreciates.

The son of Dean and Mary Hirsch of Waterloo, Nathan is a 2006 Waterloo High School graduate. He has taken the step forward to establish his own firm – Hirsch Plumbing, Inc. – in the highly competitive commercial and residential plumbing field.

“I just like to work,” Hirsch said.

He was able to get his start with the support of a business agent for St. Louis Plumbers Union Local 562. He subsequently joined Local 360 in Illinois.  Since graduating, he has worked for several area firms before deciding to take the big plunge into starting his own company.

Several years ago, his plumbing skills came to bear locally when a former employer assigned him to work installing plumbing in the then new WHS building.
About six months ago, he embarked on his own, making the investments and taking risks such as buying a business truck and the tools and materials necessary to get started.

“I did a lot of work in the Belleville area and still do,” Hirsch said.  “But my goal is to focus on Monroe County more and stay closer to home.”

Hirsch lives in Fults now. He has been establishing a strong presence in remodeling bathrooms, especially to make them more inviting to older residents.

He disagrees with the popularly advertised solution of the walk-in tubs, citing marble showers as better for safe and comfortable bathing for seniors.

“The tubs take too long to fill and empty,” he said.  “Marble showers are the best way to go.”

At this point, Hirsch is doing all of his company’s work as its owner and sole employee.

“I take a great deal of pride in my work and do what I say I will,” he affirmed.

In addition to bathroom remodeling, Hirsch – whose gray signs are appearing in yards around the area – also offers traditional plumbing services for new construction and remodeling and maintenance such as faucet repairs and replacements, installing water heaters and drain cleaning.

“I have a catalog of plumbing items for people to work from and I get deliveries from a large supplier in Belleville almost every day,” he said. “I’m busy, but ready.”
