Leona Burkhardt

Leona Burkhardt, nee Dickneite, 91, of Waterloo, died Feb. 16, 2014 in Belleville.

She was born March 6, 1922, daughter of Ben and Elenora (nee Engel) Dickneite of Harrisonville.

She was a member of St. Patrick Church in Tipton.

Surviving are her sons Joe (Kelia) Van de Riet and Jim (Charlene) Van de Riet; grandchildren Zoe (Ray) Weakly, Angela (Will) Gregson, Susan (John) Novack, Jill (Glenn) Wehrheim, Rhonda DeSpain (friend Curt), Vickie Minden, Sandy Steingrubey, Judy Rabbermann (friend Steve), Cindy (Jeff) Winkeler; 19 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers Emma Diemert, Marie Yount, Catherine (Carnel) Gilbert, Elleen (Don) Goldschmidt, Elsie Branson, George (Polly) Dickneite; brother-in-law Raymond (Shirley) Shoemaker, sisters-in-law Gerry Dickneite and Francis Dickneite, along with nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Robert Van de Riet; second husband Robert Burkhardt; brothers Sylvester, Ben, Raymond and David Dickneite; sisters Bernadine, Heider, Rose Mary Hergenroeder and Dorothy Shoemaker; daughters-in-law Mary and Barbara Van de Riet; grandson-in-law Mike Steingrubey, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Visitation took place Feb. 17 and 18 at Quernheim Funeral Home in Waterloo.

A funeral Mass took place Feb. 18 at St. Patrick Church in Tipton.

Interment followed at Ss. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Waterloo.

Memorials may be made to the Oak Hill Activity Fund, Hospice of Southern Illinois or to Masses at St. Patrick Church.
