Hazel McCarthy (nee Ruby), 97, of Valmeyer, died Dec. 5, 2015, in Waterloo.

She was born Dec. 9, 2015, in Stormlake, Iowa, daughter of the late Alphonsus J. and Mary C. Ruby (nee Harlin).

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Valmeyer, and the St. Ann Altar Sodality.

She is survived by her children Allan McCarthy, Joan (Thomas) Smith, Patrick (Jane) McCarthy and Gertie (Bob) Eshom; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Viola Whelan: and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Daniel C. McCarthy, daughter-in-law Irene McCarthy (Schilling), and sister Pearl Schaper.

Visitation was Dec. 8-9, at Quernheim Funeral Home.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 9, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Valmeyer, with Father Felix Chukwuma officiating.

Interment followed at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, Waterloo.

As an expression of sympathy, the family prefers memorial contributions to: Oak Hill Alzheimer’s Unit, St. Mary’s Building Fund or in the form of Masses.
