The Gibault boys basketball team was well on its way to a state tournament berth Tuesday night in the Class 1A Jacksonviille Supersectional against Liberty. The Hawks led by seven points, 33-26, after three quarters.

But Liberty turned up its defensive pressure and outscored Gibault 15-4 in the fourth quarter to pull out a dramatic 41-37 victory. The Hawks were held scoreless for the final six minutes of the game.

The Hawks ended their season with a record of 24-10. Brian Deterding scored 17 points to lead Gibault. The 6-foot-5 senior finished just five points short of 1,000 points for his Gibault career.

An early dunk by junior Trevor Davis got the Hawks faithful out of their seats early in the first quarter. Cold shooting and tough defense reigned in the early going.

Gibault led 18-6 at halftime, and dominated play at the start of the second half. But Liberty dashed Gibault’s dreams of a state tourney appearance in the end.
