Harry Louis Wolf | Obituary
Harry Louis Wolf, 88, of Waterloo, died July 17, 2018, in St. Louis.
He was born Nov. 23, 1929, in Waterloo, son of the late Herman Louis and Emma Wolf (nee Stickann).
Harry was a member of the Waterloo Rotary Club, Waterloo Sister Cities, Millstadt Sister Cities, German American Cultural Society, and was a 50-year member of the Waterloo American Legion.
He was the founder of the Waterloo German band and served as its leader for 73 years.
He was the recipient of 2009 Das Bundersverdienstkreuz Award (Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany), 2009 Illinois Governor’s Hometown Award, 2005 Waterloo Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award and 2009 Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award. He is on the Waterloo High School Legacy Wall and is a member of the Senior Illinoisans Hall of Fame for the Performing Arts.
He was named an Honorary Ambassador of Good Will by the city of Waterloo and was the Grand Marshal of Porta Westfalica Fest.
Harry was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, and a was member of Musicians Local 29-717 in Illinois local 2-197 in St. Louis.
He is survived by his special companion Barbara Johnson; children Russel (Debra) Wolf and Renard Wolf; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister Irene Wentzel; sister-in-law Christa Wolf; brother-in-law Wilbert Kohlmeier; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Vera Kohlmeier and brother Nelson Wolf.
Visitation is 2-8 p.m. July 22, and 9-10 a.m. July 23, at Quernheim Funeral Home, Waterloo.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. July 23, at the funeral home, Pastor Merritt Demski officiating.
Interment will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis.
