The Gibault volleyball team’s postseason journey looked as if it would come to a close Thursday night in Carlyle, as they lost their first set to Nashville, 25-21.

But the Hawks were not done yet.

They bounced back to take the following two sets, 25-20, 25-22, and become 2013 Class 1A Carlyle Regional Champions. As the No. 2 seed in their regional, the title would come as an upset, defeating the first seeded Nashville Hornets.

Missy Kimlinger led the Hawks with 16 kills on the night, as Ashley Grohmann carded an impressive 40 assists. Courtney Schutt led the team from the service line, charting 11 points for GHS — two of them aces. Teammate Brittany Laurent also notched 11 service points for the Hawks.

Gibault (22-8) will face Pinckneyville on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Carterville Sectional semifinals. If they advance, Gibault will play Thursday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. for the Class 1A Carterville Sectional title.
