After coming off a regional championship last Friday, with a 6-0 win over Freeburg, the Gibault soccer season ended with a 1-0 loss to Anna-Jonesboro in the semifinals of their 1A sectional on Tuesday evening.

The game was tied 0-0 at halftime. Anna-Jonesboro scored with 28 minutes remaining in the second half. Despite some offensive pushes from Gibault, the Hawks couldn’t get the ball in the net.

Earlier this season, Gibault defeated Anna-Jonesboro, 6-2. They would have played Althoff in the finals on Friday, a team the Hawks beat 5-2 earlier this year.

The Hawks finished the season 13-10.

As for regional action, it was a good start to the postseason for both Columbia and Waterloo.

In Columbia’s 2A regional, they defeated Mascoutah 6-0 to move onto the finals.

Sean Rickey led the way with two goals and two assists. Ryan Gudeman, Sam Spivey and Brett Meyer each had a goal. Cameron Roth recorded a goal and an assist. Adam Becker added an assist.

The Eagles will now face Marion at 6 p.m. Friday at Columbia High School. The winner earns a trip to sectionals next week.

Waterloo was on the road in Carbondale for their 2A regional. The Bulldogs blasted Salem for a 6-0 win.

Kane Osterhage had a goal and assist. Dawson Holden, Clay Metz, Ben Huels, Ethan Lewis and Drew Marshall each scored for the ‘Dogs. Tyler Grob, Justin Kohler, Philip Most and Jake Wagner each tallied an assist.

The ‘Dogs will play at 4 p.m. Friday at Carbondale. The winner moves onto sectionals.

Both Columbia and Waterloo could run into each other again. If each team wins on Friday, they are both in host Columbia’s 2A sectional.

The last team these two teams met was in the CYC Tournament, where Columbia won the game 2-1. But this time, a chance at the state tournament would be on the line. They would potentially square off in the sectional finals next week.

Again, though, this all depends on Friday’s outcomes, as well as the sectional semifinals.
