Gibault’s bid for a trip to the Class 2A state volleyball tournament ended in heartbreak on Saturday.

The Hawks lost in three entertaining sets to Albion (Edwards County) in the Vandalia supersectional.

But they didn’t go down without a fight.

Actually, Gibault (24-14) was in control of things early, taking the first set 25-19.

Edwards County showed why it’s making a third straight trip to the state tourney by bouncing back to claim the second set, 25-17.

The third set was a back-and-forth battle to the end, as it took five match points to determine the victor. After Edwards County took a large lead, Gibault stormed back with a 14-5 run to set up match point at 26-25.

But Edwards County stayed cool under pressure and pulled out the set, 29-27, to win the supersectional title.

Lauren Goldschmidt, the Republic-Times Athlete of the Week, led the Hawks with 17 kills for the match. Kelly Dooley added 10 kills for Gibault.
