Friday morning fire in Waterloo

The Waterloo police and fire departments, Monroe County EMS and Monroe County Sheriff’s Department responded to 11 Station West at 11 a.m. Friday for a report of a structure fire.

Smoke was observed upon arrival, and a police officer was able to contain the blaze prior to fire personnel arriving on scene.

There were no injuries reported, and the residence was unoccupied at the time of the incident.

Waterloo Fire Department First Assistant Chief Andrew Glessner said the fire appears to have started outside of a sunroom door.

“There was speculation from the neighbors that a cigarette may be to blame, but we can’t confirm that,” he said.

Damage extended inside around the door and window frames to the ceiling but did not advance past that, Glessner said.

“The quick action of police and their extinguishers prevented further extension, without a doubt,” Glessner said.

The residence primarily sustained smoke damage, which also spread to adjacent units at Station West.

“The quick action of the neighbors to call 911 prevented what could have been a dangerous situation,” Glessner said. “Had they been a few minutes later, the fire would have been a lot worse.”
