Maeystown Fruehlingsfest still on despite flooding
The popular annual Fruehlingsfest antique, craft and garden show will take place Sunday despite flooding that occurred Saturday night in Maeystown due to heavy rains.
The Maeystown Fire Department was called out shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday to assist with traffic control and the monitoring of high water in and around the village park and on Maeystown Road near Baum Road.
Picnic tables and other items along the village creek and in the park were reported to be floating away down the creek. Some vendors had already set up for Sunday’s event along the creek when the flooding occurred.
Event organizer Marcia Braswell said there was wind damage to several vendor booths along with collapsed tents.
“Massive amounts of water came under the bridge,” Braswell told the Republic-Times. “Several vendors actually had things washed down the creek. Some are setting up again (Sunday), some are not.”
Braswell added that she had only seen the water that high and fast-moving in the creek one other time in the 1990s.
Maeystown resident Cindy Heck said the creek ran fast — and even a bit higher — in 2003.
“My house gets all the water around it, along with the post office and clubhouse next door,” she said.
KK Road near Madonnaville was also reported to have flooding issues Saturday night. A flood advisory was issued for Monroe County until 1 a.m. Sunday. There were no reports of injuries resulting from the flash flooding.
Fruehlingsfest runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday along the creek and the old rock mill in Maeystown, featuring antiques as well as nurseries selling annuals, perennials and herbs. Food and refreshments are also available.
