Fatal train crash litigation ends
The Belleville News-Democrat reported last week that two civil lawsuits stemming from the 2019 death of young Waterloo farmer Jonah Matthews near Fults have ended.
According to the BND article, the Matthews family, Union Pacific Railroad and Glendell Farms of Waterloo agreed to dismiss a wrongful death lawsuit in St. Clair County Circuit Court after the defendants had offered a monetary settlement that the Matthews family accepted.
Union Pacific also had a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, seeking $3.6 million in damages related to a train derailment during the fatal crash.
Per the BND, Union Pacific and Glendell Farms asked the presiding judge to dismiss the federal case due to matters between all involved parties having been resolved.
Matthews, 23, was driving a tractor for Glendell Farms on a field railroad crossing between Fults Road and Kidd Lake Road in rural Monroe County when a Union Pacific train struck the tractor the evening of June 14, 2019.
