Emily Cortner | Obituary

Emily Cortner (nee Armbruster), 87, of Smithton, born May 28, 1936, in Prairie du Long Township, died Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at her home on the family farm.

In her younger years, Emily worked at the New Athens Shoe Factory. She spent many years working side by side with her daughter on the family farm. 

She is survived by her daughter, Geralyn “Gerri” Cortner, sister Doris Banach of Scheller and many dear nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Cortner, who died on Oct. 19, 1989; her parents Adam and Appolonia (nee Roth) Armbruster; brother, Robert Armbruster; brother-in-law Leo Banach; mother-in-law Marcella Rettinghouse; and nephew William Armbruster.

Visitation is 9-11 a.m. April 27 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Paderborn.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated following visitation at the church with Fr. Clyde Grogan officiating.

Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Paderborn.

Emily loved quilting so much. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Michael’s Quilters to buy supplies for the beautiful quilts they make for the church picnic and Masses.
