Elva “Sis” Louise Sopp | Obituary
Elva “Sis” Louise Sopp, nee VanPelt, 90, of Waterloo, formerly of Cahokia, died Jan. 10, 2015 in St. Louis, Mo.
Mrs. Sopp was born Oct. 27, 1924, in East Carondelet, daughter of the late Lester and Louise, nee Bettis, Van Pelt.
Elva graduated from Dupo High School and worked as a secretary for the Village of Cahokia for 43 years, retiring in 2001.
She was a member of Christ United Church of Christ in Dupo, Christ UCC Women’s Guild, past consistory president, and Sunday School teacher, a member of VFW Auxiliary Post 6368, Dupo and the St. Clair County Merit Commission. Sis enjoyed spending time with her family, her church, and traveling.
Elva was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, William Russell Sopp, whom she married Sept. 3, 1948 and who died May 25, 1998; her parents; two brothers, Lester and Charles VanPelt; and a brother-in-law, Hank Vanover.
Surviving are a son, Steven (Leslie) Sopp of Dupo; two granddaughters, Lea (Michael) Thebeau and Kara (Curt) Harres, all of Columbia; four great-granddaughters, Claire and Caroline Thebeau and Molly and Emery Harres; three sisters, Wilda “Midge” Vanover of East Carondelet. Velma Crabtree of Belleville, and Myrna (Bob) Schiemer of Punta Gorda, Fla.; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Jan. 14 at Braun Family Funeral Home in Columbia and 9 to 10 a.m. Jan. 15 at Christ United Church of Christ in Dupo.
Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Jan. 15 at the church.
Interment will follow at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville.
