A fatal truck rollover shut down Route 3 at KK Road south of Waterloo Saturday afternoon.

Just before 1 p.m., a Dodge Ram with Missouri license plates traveling southbound on Route 3  left the right side of the road just before the intersection with KK Road. It appeared to have struck a culvert there, rolling over before coming to rest upside down in the ditch on the right side of the road. The driver, identified Saturday evening as Joseph Meis, 72, of St. Louis, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Meis was on his way to the shooting complex in Sparta, his family members told Monroe County Coroner Vicki Koerber.

The Waterloo Fire Department responded to the crash along with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, and an ARCH Air Medical Transport helicopter was dispatched to the scene. It landed but left later without transporting anyone.

Illinois State Police dispatched an accident reconstruction crew to investigate the crash. An official ISP crash report has not yet been released.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
