The Waterloo High School wrestling team made even more history this season, tying a program record with seven wrestlers advancing to the sectional round.

Bladen Sease (157 pounds) and Matthew Deutch (106 pounds) were crowned regional champions Saturday at the Marion Regional.

Other Bulldogs qualifying for this weekend’s Mahomet Sectional were Konnor Stephens (120 pounds), Ty Kinzinger (126 pounds), Jackson Deutch (175 pounds), Jaxson Mathenia (190 pounds) and Drew Glowacki (285 pounds).

“We tied our school record from two years ago when (Jordan) Sommers and (Brandon) Lloyd were leading the team,” Waterloo head coach Chase Guercio said. “Still, it was a great day for many of our kids.”

Sommers and Lloyd were state medalists that season, which was their senior year.

Sease, a co-captain on this year’s wrestling squad along with Jackson Deutch, is currently 31-12 on the season.

Matthew Deutch is 32-11 on the season.

Stephens, who placed second at the regional, is 34-12 on the season.

Kinzinger, who also placed second at the regional, is 35-13 in his 2023-24 campaign.

Jackson Deutch also placed second at the regional. He is 37-8 on the season.

Mathenia is yet another Waterloo wrestler who placed second at the regional. He has a record of 19-4 on the season.

Glowacki, who placed third at the regional to advance, is 25-22 on the season.

Waterloo, which won its first Mississippi Valley Conference title and picked up the most dual victories in a season for the program already in this 2023-24 campaign, is hoping to qualify multiple wrestlers for the IHSA state tournament.

“Hopefully we can advance a few of those guys to the state tournament,” Guercio said.

Guercio also extended praise to outgoing senior wrestlers Brady Rose and Nathan Lloyd for their contributions to the program.

“Both were captains for us and fought hard all year on a fantastic team,” Guercio said of the seniors. “Nathan came back from a pretty nasty early season injury and wrestled in the 215 weight class (at the regional) while weighing less than 190 (pounds). Both of these kids ooze toughness and we will miss them in our room.”
