The Seymour name is synonymous with success at the annual Monroe County Fair Auto Demolition Derby, and the 2024 version further solidified that reputation.

Two of the top four trophies handed out Friday night went to Seymours as a capacity crowd once again filled the grandstands for hard-hitting car crushing in the mud at the fairgrounds in Waterloo.

The first event of the night was the Full Size Bone Stock class, which featured a 14-car field. Fresh off his win in one of the Figure 8 races Wednesday night at the fair, the black No. 45 car of Waterloo’s Mike Seymour collected yet another trophy. The Mad Dog award for ferocious hitting went to Adam Eckart of Fults in his No. 46.

Next was the Compact Bone Stock class, which saw a crowded 22-car field. First time Monroe County Fair derby entrant Lane Riebeling of Waterloo emerged victorious in this one with his black No. 77 car over some tough competition – including derby veteran Tony Brellinger, who placed second. The Mad Dog award went to Roger Reitz of Renault in his No. 53 car.

The third event was the Compact Light Weld class, which featured 21 cars. The black-and-white No. L1J car of Columbia’s Eli Gummersheimer outlasted the field after getting some help earlier on. The front end of his car was stuck on the wall before another derby driver delivered a hit that put Gummersheimer’s car back in action. The No. 34e car of Columbia’s TJ Ervin was awarded the Mad Dog award.

Ending the night were the heavy hitters in the Semi Stock class, which featured 18 cars that were built to last. This event featured the father-son duo of Bud and Ryan Mathes in old East St. Louis police cars, as well as pairs of Krebels, Lloyds and Seymours. As expected, this event lasted the better part of an hour before a winner was declared.

In the end, Waterloo’s Patrick Seymour took the top trophy with his red-and-black No. 454 car. Taking the Mad Dog award was Jesse Fitzwater of Kinmundy.
