The Waterloo Fire Department responded shortly after 12:30 p.m. Thursday to a small fire on a second-floor wooden deck at JV’s Downtown Bar & Grill, 117 North Main Street.

The fire appears to have originated in a trash can belonging to a resident of an apartment above the restaurant before spreading to a corner of the deck. The resident had apparently dumped hot coals into the trash, resulting in the fire.

“Quick action taken by a patron of the bar and the use of an extinguisher knocked down the fire that was believed to be caused by something placed into a waste can,” Waterloo Fire Chief Brett Wiegand said, adding that “there was minor damage to the deck and business (at JV’s) was only temporarily disrupted.”
