Crossing guard brings smiles to Valmeyer

Halloween may have ended for trick-or-treaters on Saturday night, but for Bob Frierdich, every school day is Halloween.

The most common question Valmeyer Elementary School students ask Frierdich is, “Who are you supposed to be?”

Frierdich has taken over crossing guard duties every afternoon from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m.  Instead of just helping kids cross the street, he has fun with it. Every day, Frierdich wears a different costume.

“I guess it’s right around 40 costumes,” Frierdich said. “I’m expecting to continue on and do it for as long as I can. Ninety percent of the costumes have been mine. In the beginning, it was pretty easy. I could just grab things from around the house and wear them. After about the 20th day, I was starting to get a little slim with my choices. So, I’ve started to go to thrift shops and Halloween has helped a little bit with some of the bigger places that sell costumes…>>>
