CPD investigating woman’s death

Leah Sanford

The Columbia Police Department received assistance from an Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services unit and the Monroe County Coroner’s office for an active death investigation at a residence in the area of West Legion Avenue and South Rapp Avenue near Eagleview Elementary on Wednesday afternoon.

Columbia Police Chief Joe Edwards confirmed the investigation, but released no further information.

On Thursday morning, the coroner’s office released the name of the deceased as 28-year-old Leah Sanford of Columbia.

“At this time, there are no further details other than an autopsy was performed yesterday afternoon, with results pending toxicology,” Monroe County Coroner Vicki Koerber said.

She added the crime scene unit was dispatched to the scene as a precaution, but no suspicious or foul play is suspected at this point.

Visitation for Sanford is 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m until time of service Monday at Quernheim Funeral Home, Waterloo. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Surviving relatives include her son, Dylan, along with brother Morrie and parents Morril P. III and Nancy Sanford.
