Columbia wins CYC tourney championship
The Columbia soccer team won the CYC Tournament on Saturday, toppling Ladue 3-2 in fantastic fashion at Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo.
The Eagles got on the board first via a Sean Rickey front flip throw-in at the 28-minute mark in the first half. A deflection at the top of the box resulted in a goal by Adam Becker, and Columbia led 2-0 late in the first half. Ladue notched a goal and the score was 2-1 at halftime.
Ladue tied the game early in the second half, and the two teams battled even until the final minute. Rickey was awarded a penalty kick with 17 seconds remaining and converted on the game-winning goal, giving the Eagles the title.
It wasn’t scheduled on the regular season docket, but the Columbia and Waterloo soccer teams played each other on Friday night. Both teams won their respective pools in the CYC Tournament and met in the semifinals at Soccer Park.
Columbia walked away as the victors, 2-1. All three goals in the game were scored in the first half.
The game was scoreless until the 24-minute mark in the first half. That’s when things got a little interesting. Columbia’s Ryan Gudeman was on a breakaway, when Waterloo goaltender Trevor Coplin tried to break it up.
They met right outside the top of the box. Coplin broke up the play, but was given a red card. Kyle Schaefer replaced him in net and Waterloo played a man down the rest of the game. When play resumed, Columbia had a free kick just outside the box.
Rickey took advantage of the situation. He nailed the goal toward the upper-90, where the right goal post and crossbar meet, for the goal and 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, Columbia’s Connor Jackson scored to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
It seemed to be all Columbia. But Waterloo would not give up.
On a bouncing ball going toward the Columbia goal, Waterloo’s Philip Most leaped up for the header. He got it, the ball went past the Columbia keeper and Most found the ball first. He kicked a dribbler in to get the Bulldogs on the board. Waterloo trailed 2-0 with 10 minutes to play in the first.
It was the last goal of the game. Each team was held scoreless in the second half.
To reach the semifinal, each team won their final pool games Thursday at Columbia High School.
Waterloo started the action with a rematch against Belleville West — the only team to defeat the Bulldogs this season. After missing out on a few corner chances, the Bulldogs got on the board first. Ryan Stites scored on basically an empty net. Waterloo’s leading scorer, Kane Osterhage, attacked the net, drawing out the Maroons goaltender and last defender. The ball deflected off Belleville West’s defender and to Stites for the easy put-in. Waterloo led 1-0 with nine minutes to play in the first half.
The Maroons answered with a header in the second half by Jack Langen, off a corner kick. But Waterloo didn’t let that get to them and scored 10 minutes later. Ben Huels scored with 12 minutes remaining, giving the ‘Dogs the 2-1 win — and revenge. Ethan Lewis was credited with the assist.

Columbia flew to a 4-0 halftime lead. Sean Rickey had a hat trick and Ryan Gudeman scored a goal. To put the team up 4-0, Rickey scored on a corner kick. With less than 30 seconds to go in the half, Rickey was looking to send a kick into the box. Instead of setting up a scoring chance, the ball deflected off of the Triad goalie and into the net.
In the second half, Columbia scored three more times to put the game away. Logan Cannon, Cameron Roth and Gudeman each scored.
After the semifinal game, Columbia improves to 12-0-1 and Waterloo is 14-2 on the season.
In non-tourney soccer action, Gibault topped Anna-Jonesboro on senior day Saturday at Oerter Park, 6-2. On Thursday, Gibault defeated Whitfield, 6-0. Ben Mueth scored a hat trick; Logan Doerr scored twice and Jake Rueter added a goal.
Valmeyer fell to Wesclin on Thursday, 3-2. Trent Larson and Easton Wallace scored for the Pirates.
