CHS, WHS bowling undefeated
The halfway mark for the high school bowling season is approaching and two area teams are still without a loss.
The Columbia girls (7-0) and Waterloo boys (9-0) teams are on a roll, with both coming off a Monroe County Cup win and a successful week against top opponents.
The Lady Eagles snapped Cahokia’s undefeated season last Tuesday at Red Bird Lanes, 33-7. Last week’s Republic-Times Athlete of the Week, Miranda Rodenhofer, carded a team high 632 series, bowling all three games over 200 (204, 205 and 223).
The team went on to defeat Wesclin (34-6) and Gibault (35-5) in the following days.
The Columbia boys (5-3) also topped Gibault on Thursday, 30.5-9.5 with Cameron Touchette bowling the high series of 646 (211, 212, 223).
The Waterloo boys team defeated Metro East Lutheran last Tuesday night 37-3. The Bulldogs’ Michael McGarry, who shared the athlete of the week honors with Rodenhofer, bowled the match’s high score with a 225. He has had the highest team score in seven out of nine competitions for the Bulldogs so far this season.

The Bulldog girls (6-3) won those two matches, as well. Waterloo sophomore Gabbie Hoge came away with top scores of 192 against Jerseyville and 215 against Roxana.
Waterloo faced East Alton-Wood River on Tuesday, with everyone else taking a break until after the holidays.
Bowling Sectional assignments released
The IHSA Bowling Sectional Tournament assignments have been released. The girls will bowl at Mt. Vernon on Feb. 2, while the boys will bowl at Cahokia on Jan. 19. The top two teams and top two individuals not on the qualifying teams will advance to the State Finals on Jan. 25 and 26 (boys) and Feb. 8 and 9 (girls).
Boys sectional assignments: Columbia will compete in the Cahokia sectional, while Waterloo and Gibault will compete in the Mt. Vernon sectional.
Girls sectional assignments: Columbia, Waterloo and Gibault will all compete in the Mt. Vernon sectional.
