A few local high school baseball teams are trending up while others are hitting some bumps in the road. 

Columbia (15-4) won four of five recent contests. 

The Eagles won 14-3 at Wood River on Tuesday, getting two home runs from Brady Mathews and another off the bat of Lucas Riebeling. 

On Monday, it was a 5-3 victory for the Eagles at Marquette. Mathews struck out eight in a complete game mound effort as Columbia made the most out of just four total hits. 

On Saturday, pitching prevailed again in a 1-0 win for Columbia over Belleville East. Sam Donald and Logan Sabo combined for a five-hit shutout as the Eagles only scratched out three total hits. 

This past Thursday saw the Eagles win 4-2 at home over conference rival Freeburg. Cash Bailey went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs to pace the Columbia offense. Riebeling pitched a complete game. 

Last Tuesday, the Eagles were upended 3-1 at home by Roxana. Columbia took a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning, only to see the Shells plate three to emerge victorious. Mathews went the distance on the mound, allowing two earned runs. 

Ben Simmons leads the Eagles in hitting at .421 with 13 RBIs, followed by Micah James at .405 with 12 RBIs. 

Mathews is 4-2 with a 1.25 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 33 and two-thirds innings pitched.

Riebeling is 4-1 with a 1.73 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 24 and one-third innings pitched in addition to his five homers and 16 RBIs at the plate.

Waterloo (9-7) lost 12-2 at Triad on Monday, as an eight-run third inning by the Knights put them well on their way. On Wednesday, Waterloo lost 11-6 to Triad. A six-run third put the ‘Dogs up 6-4 after four innings, but the Knights rallied for six runs in their half of the fifth.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs played at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, falling 6-1. 

This past Friday, Waterloo picked up a 10-0 win at Mater Dei. Max Oswald went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs. Nate Phillips struck out eight in a five-inning complete game. 

Last Wednesday, the ‘Dogs lost 4-2 to Mascoutah. Koby Osterhage and Patrick O’Donnell collected two hits each for Waterloo, which hosts Collinsville on Friday before playing Saturday at Valmeyer. Waterloo hosts Highland on Monday and then travels Tuesday to Highland. 

O’Donnell is hitting .400 with 15 runs, followed by Drake Luedeman at .367. 

Phillips is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA. 

Valmeyer (11-5) won 8-2 over New Athens on Tuesday. Luke Blackwell went 4-for-4 with three runs and struck out nine over five innings pitched. 

The Pirates dropped a 4-3 contest at home Monday against the St. Louis Patriots despite a two-run homer off the bat of Blackwell. 

On Friday, it was a 13-4 victory for Valmeyer over Bunker Hill. Chase Snyder went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs to pace the Pirates.

Last Tuesday, Valmeyer won 15-1 at Dupo. Landon Roy went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, with both Blackwell and Ripken Voelker also driving in two runs each. Blackwell picked up the pitching win. 

The Pirates play Thursday at Sparta, host Chester on Friday and Waterloo on Saturday, and then host Gibault on Monday. 

Roy is hitting .447 with 25 runs and 16 stolen bases. Blackwell is hitting .444 with 10 extra base hits, 25 RBIs and 20 runs. On the mound, Blackwell is 4-0 with a 1.54 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 22 and two-thirds innings.

Gibault (7-14) has won four straight following a losing funk. 

On Wednesday, Gibault trounced Trico to the tune of 15-0. Darrin Kunkelmann went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Brady Biffar also drove in three runs.

On Monday, it was an 8-7 win for the Hawks over Sparta. Gibault rallied for two runs in its final at-bat. JJ Kinsey pitched six innings and the Hawks got two hits each from Andy Altes, Robert Pierpoint and Peyton Schaefer. 

On Saturday, the Hawks won 7-1 over Okawville. Schaefer again collected two hits and also threw three solid innings in relief of Noah Koeninger. Michael Wessel also had two hits and drove in two runs. 

This past Friday, Gibault won 5-0 over Red Bud. Biffar struck out 10 in a two-hit complete game shutout. At the plate, he was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Tyler Frierdich, Ty Frierdich and Kunkelman all contributed a pair of hits each in the win. 

Gibault battles both Freeburg and Teutopolis at Freeburg this Saturday and plays Monday at Valmeyer. 

Tyler Frierdich is hitting .333 with 14 stolen bases, followed by Biffar at .328 with 17 runs. 

Biffar is 2-2 with a 2.46 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 31 and one-third innings pitched. 

Dupo (2-6) lost 16-1 to Roxana last Wednesday following last Tuesday loss to Valmeyer. 

The Tigers host Columbia this coming Monday and host Lebanon on Tuesday. 

The top hitters for Dupo this spring have been Teegan Hargrove, Deegan Prater and Ashton Stein.

On the mound, Prater is 2-0 with a 0.70 ERA.
