The Waterloo baseball team is clicking on all cylinders, as evidenced by Monday’s 3-0 home win to avenge an earlier defeat to Mississippi Valley Conference foe Jerseyville.

Pitchers Corey Vogel and Ben Maurer combined for the three-hit shutout victory, and Tyler McAlister went 3-for-3 at the plate with a fifth inning home run.

McAlister’s bloop single in the third inning scored Kane Osterhage to break a scoreless tie. The ‘Dogs defense also shined in the victory.

Vogel has been solid on the mound in key conference games, and the Bulldogs currently lead the MVC with a 6-1 record. He is expected to get the ball in another big conference contest Monday at Mascoutah.

Following a 14-8 non-conference loss to Highland at Busch Stadium, The ‘Dogs (19-7) won the Centralia Tournament over the weekend, defeating Wesclin, 11-3, on Friday followed by a 10-0 win over Centralia and 11-0 win over South Central on Saturday.

McAlister, Maurer and Ryan Aycock collected three hits each against Wesclin. That trio added two hits apiece in the win over Centralia, as did Christian Schmidt. Hayden Bender went 3-for-3 in the South Central win as Cole Kaiping and Vogel combined for the five-inning, one-hit shutout.

On the season, Aycock (.486) and McAlister (.485) lead the offense along with Osterhage (.410).

Waterloo will play at Civic Memorial on Wednesday and host Mater Dei for a Saturday doubleheader prior to Monday’s clash with Mascoutah.

Eagles get third no-no
Columbia knew it was going to rely on pitching and defense this season, but head coach Keith Jany couldn’t have expected to see three no-hitters by three different pitchers so far.

Junior righty Andrew Hoguet threw a five-inning no-hitter Monday at Marissa in a 17-0 win. Brendan Wilhelm and JT Broshears threw no-hitters for the Eagles earlier this season.

“My assistant coach, Neal O’Donnell, has done a terrific job with the pitching staff this year,” Jany said. “Andrew looked dominant out there, as there was only one hard hit ball off him. He did a terrific job pounding the strike zone and attacking hitters. Hats off to him.”

Hoguet finished with eight strikeouts and only one walk, which came with one out in the fifth inning.

Broshears was 3-for-4 with four RBIs for the Eagles and Jacob Hill also had three hits. Ryan Gudeman went 2-for-4 with a home run.

On Friday, Columbia picked up a 6-2 win over Windsor. Cameron Touchette went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases to lead the Eagles. Brian Dougherty, Lamont Read and Zach Mathews added two hits apiece.

Last Wednesday, Columbia dropped a hard-luck 5-4 game to a tough 20-2 Freeburg squad. Dougherty and

Mathews had two hits apiece.

Columbia (15-5) hosted Breese Central on Tuesday and will play at Wesclin on Thursday before hosting Triad on Friday.

Hawks drop recent games
Gibault has dropped four of its past six games, including two straight.
After defeating Whitfield, 15-3, last Wednesday, Gibault suffered an 18-8 loss Thursday against Civic Memorial and a 19-8 loss at home Monday to Alton as defensive miscues played a factor.

Jordan McFarland smashed two home runs and had four RBIs in the Whitfield win.

Trevor Davis added two hits and Ethan Shields picked up the mound victory.

Tyler Brinkmann led the way with a 2-for-3 day in the loss to CM. Alec Skaer went 3-for-4 and Dylan McCoy went 2-for-3 in the loss to Alton.

At 14-11, the Hawks hope to right the ship starting with Tuesday’s game against Windsor, followed by a

Wednesday game at Mater Dei. Gibault hosts Nashville on Thursday.

Chandler Purcell leads the team in hitting at .463.

Pirates keep fighting
Valmeyer lost to a tough Freeburg squad but otherwise performed well over the past week, posting wins over Lebanon, Red Bud and Marissa.

Last Tuesday, Griffin Seidler, Zach Koonce, Eric Smith and Cole Juelfs each had two hits in an 8-7 win over Lebanon.

On Friday, Seidler and Hunter Brewer each went 2-for-3 at the plate and Brewer pitched six strong innings in a 6-1 win over Red Bud.

Kyle Hentis collected three hits for the Musketeers.

Zach Williams hit a home run in Monday’s 19-9 loss to Freeburg, as Drake Hicks took the loss on the mound.

The Pirates (15-13) rebounded on Tuesday, however, to blast Marissa.

Valmeyer will play at Dupo on Thursday.

Easton Wallace currently leads the team in hitting and pitching this season, posting a .425 average at the plate and 5-0 record with a 2.36 ERA on the mound.
