The Republic-Times Athlete of the Week is Waterloo Buds pitcher Brooks McDowell. The righthander threw two scoreless innings to close out Waterloo’s 7-2 win over the St. Louis Spikes in Saturday’s Valmeyer Midsummer Classic semifinal, then came back Sunday for a nine-inning complete game victory over the Valmeyer Lakers in the championship contest. McDowell, a former pitcher at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, was named Most Valuable Player of this year’s tournament.
