Baseball teams keep firing

The Columbia, Gibault and Valmeyer baseball teams are all flirting with .500 seasons down the home stretch.

Columbia (11-8) lost a 3-2 battle with a tough Freeburg squad on Monday. Adam Wibbenmeyer struck out seven over six innings and Sam Bonaldi led the offense with two hits and a run.

The Eagles won 7-3 at Salem on Wednesday. Drew Graves went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Matt Howard had three hits and an RBI.

On Thursday, Columbia used a six-run fourth inning to win 7-1 at home over Okawville. Howard went 2-for-3 and Graves added a double and two RBIs.

Last Friday, the Eagles edged Okawville, 3-1. Bonaldi and Howard both went 2-for-4 and Dom Voegele added a double and RBI. He also struck out five over four innings for the mound victory.

Last Wednesday, senior righthander Jackson Holmes threw a five-inning perfect game as the Eagles won 13-0 over Wesclin. He struck out eight. Jonah James went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Voegele went 2-for-2 with a triple and three runs.

Last Tuesday, Columbia dropped an 11-9 contest to Roxana. The Eagles rallied for four runs in the seventh inning, but came up just short.

Bonaldi leads the Eagles on offense at .457 with 15 runs, followed by Howard at .429 with 13 RBIs and Graves at .364 with 12 RBIs.

Columbia plays Saturday at Highland and hosts Breese Central on Monday.

Gibault (8-9) dropped a 4-0 contest at Belleville East on Wednesday. Kameron Hanvey went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases.

The Hawks won a rivalry showdown at home against Valmeyer last Friday, 5-1. Ryan Bollinger threw another complete game for the Hawks with six strikeouts. Hanvey went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases and two runs. Jude Green added two hits for Gibault.

Jacob Rowold struck out eight in a complete game pitching effort for the Pirates. He also had a hit and run scored. Clay Juelfs added a hit and RBI.

Last Wednesday, Gibault won 19-3 over Cahokia. The Hawks scored 14 runs in the first inning. Chase Schrader went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, with Nick Chambers and Eli Garcia adding three RBIs each.

Garcia leads the Hawks in hitting at .314 with 13 RBIs, followed by Hanvey at .304 with 21 stolen bases and 14 runs.

Ryan Bollinger is 3-2 with a 1.57 ERA and four complete games.

The Hawks play Friday at Roxana and Saturday at Valmeyer.

The Pirates (8-7) blasted New Athens at home on Thursday, 15-0, on senior night. Rowold went 4-for-4 with two triples, a double and nine RBIs.

Valmeyer scored two in the bottom of the seventh to win 4-3 at home against Lebanon last Thursday. Elijah Miller went 2-for-4 with two runs and Henry Weber went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Evan Rowe-Brown pitched two scoreless innings for the victory in relief.

Last Tuesday, the Pirates won 9-8 in eight innings against Dupo. Rowold went 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs. Ethan Rowe-Brown went 2-for-3 with two runs.

Rowold leads the Pirates in hitting at .476 with seven triples, 18 runs and 16 RBIs, followed by Weber at .348 with 12 RBIs.

Rowold is 3-3 with a 3.33 ERA on the mound.

Waterloo (4-16) has lost six straight.

On Monday, Waterloo lost 9-1 to Highland. Marcus Heusohn hit an RBI double.

On Wednesday, Waterloo lost 9-0 at Highland.

Last Thursday, the Bulldogs scored four in the seventh at Belleville West but lost 5-4. Heusohn homered and had three RBIs.

Last Tuesday, the ‘Dogs were no-hit in a 6-0 defeat at Triad. 

Waterloo plays Friday at O’Fallon and Saturday vs. Althoff at O’Fallon.

Heusohn leads the Bulldogs with two home runs, eight RBIs and nine runs.

Dupo (2-8) won 14-10 over Wood River last Friday. Nate Ticer went 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs.

Last Thursday, Dupo dropped a 10-3 contest at Chester. Camden Biggs went 3-for-4 for the Tigers.
