The Hecker and Red Bud fire departments responded about 8 a.m. Tuesday to a barn fire on the farm of Brad and Brenda Chandler at 8745 Nike Road. Flames were showing from the structure upon firefighter arrival.

The barn received extensive damage, but firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby structures. The family said several chicks and young pigs inside the barn perished in the blaze.

The Chandlers praised local firefighters for responding so quickly to the fire and preventing further property damage on their farm.
