Local hoopsters named all-state
Two local high school hoops standouts received statewide accolades for their success on the court this winter.
The Illinois Basketball Coaches Association announced its 2024 All-State Boys Basketball Team in classes 1A-4A last week.
Named to the IBCA Class 1A All-State First Team was Gibault Catholic High School senior guard Kanen Augustine. He averaged 14 points, 2.7 assists and more than two steals per game this season for the Hawks, who went 21-15 on the season and won a third straight regional championship.
Kanen’s older brother Kaden Augustine was an all-state selection last season for the 2023 state champion Hawks. Kaden now plays college hoops at Fontbonne University in St. Louis.
Named to the IBCA Class 2A All-State First Team was Columbia High School 6-foot-8 junior Sam Donald. He averaged 21 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season while leading the Eagles to a 24-9 record.
Donald shot 78 percent from the free throw line for the season. He was also a solid long-range shooter for the Eagles, making 39 percent of his three-point attempts.
Donald has scored 1,411 career points at CHS and has a chance next season to eclipse the 2,000-point barrier.
