Aftershock calling it quits after 10 years
After 10 years as one of Monroe County’s most beloved cover bands, Aftershock is calling it quits.
Not just yet, though. The group plans to finish out 2014 and play their last show together in January 2015.
The band is made up of four members: Brian Hoffman, Troy Henke and Denny Gum, all of Waterloo, and Bill Dierker of St. Louis.
They’ve graced stages all over Monroe County and beyond, playing everything from summer festivities like Waterloo Homecoming to gigs at BoBeck’s.
The three Waterloo members were in a successful band together before Aftershock called Route 3 and have been playing a total of 20 years.
Aftershock came about when they acquired Dierker and sat around to talk about names. Hoffman remembers having pages upon pages of names, but “Aftershock” was the name that stuck.
“It really wasn’t anything significant,” drummer Henke said. “It was just a name that sort of kept coming up.”
As a band, some of their favorite memories are playing Waterloo Homecoming every year and the first time they played together as Aftershock.
“We didn’t know what to expect that first show at BoBeck’s,” Hoffman said. “But it was absolutely packed. It’s one of my favorite shows we’ve ever played.”
They’ve also played at various picnics throughout the county, which are always unique and fun, Hoffman said.
“Each one had it’s own unique feel to it,” he said.
Henke and Hoffman said the community feedback over the years has been great.
“We’re getting even more now that we’re calling it quits,” Henke said with a laugh.
Aftershock members said they’d even have people follow them from show to show.
“You’d play here and go play in Belleville and see the same people,” Hoffman said. “That’s always really cool.”
Though the band has a long list of songs they play as a group, they all agreed “Shine” by Collective Soul is one of their favorites. Other songs they brought up were “Learning To Fly” by Tom Petty and music by Prince.
“Prince shocked the hell out of people when we first started doing that,” Dierker said.
The guys are calling it quits not really for any one reason, but just because they feel like it’s time.
“Two of us have families, and things are just different now than they were a few years back,” Hoffman said. “It’s our 10th year and we’re all on good terms, so we figured we should quit while we’re ahead.”
That being said, they have officially announced the date of their final show as Aftershock.
“It’s going to be Jan. 10 at BoBeck’s,” Hoffman said. “It’ll be special.”
They’re hoping for a large crowd to match the very first show they ever played there.
“It just seemed like the right thing to do,” Hoffman said. “We’d love to see some fans and friends we haven’t seen in a while.”
