Eagles outlast Hawks in OT
In yet another thrilling soccer showdown between longtime rivals, Columbia outlasted Gibault, 1-0, in overtime last Tuesday night.
Jonah James scored for the Eagles in the second OT session. Gibault goalkeeper Connor Olson preserved the scoreless tie with a sensational save on a penalty kick by James in the first OT session.
Olson had 10 saves in the game.
Columbia (9-1-2) is unbeaten in its past 10 games.
On Saturday, the Eagles blanked Freeburg, 5-0. Karson Bridges netted the hat trick and Jack Steckler added two goals.
James had three assists for the Eagles, who battle rival Waterloo on Wednesday night before playing in a Springfield tournament this weekend.
James (15 goals, five assists) and Bridges (15 goals, three assists) lead Columbia in scoring this season.
Gibault (1-8-1) followed up its heartbreaking loss to Columbia with its first win of the season on Thursday.
The Hawks downed Freeburg, 5-0. Gavin Kohnz scored twice and recorded an assist. Other goals were scored by Alex Bira, Helio Neto Franca and Carlos Simoni.
McKenzie Haudrich recorded two assists for the Hawks, who play at Granite City on Thursday, host Metro-East Lutheran on Saturday, play at Clayton on Monday and play at Waterloo on Tuesday.
Waterloo (11-3) won two of three recent matches.
Last Tuesday, the Bulldogs won 4-0 over Highland. Kyle Stewart scored twice and other goals came from Derek Young and Dalton Blanchard.
On Thursday, Waterloo lost to undefeated Triad, 1-0, in a key Mississippi Valley Conference showdown. The Knights had consistent pressure throughout the game and finally broke through with a second half score. Sam Ward made eight saves in net for the ‘Dogs.
On Monday, Waterloo picked up a 4-1 win over Jerseyville. Hayden Reese scored two goals and contributed an assist. Young added a goal and an assist and Stewart also scored.
Reese, a senior captain, leads the Bulldogs in scoring this season with nine goals and nine assists.
Young has seven goals and three assists.
Waterloo plays at Columbia on Wednesday and hosts Gibault this coming Tuesday.
Valmeyer (0-9) is still in search of its first victory of the season. The Pirates hosted Freeburg on Tuesday and play at Wesclin on Thursday.
On Friday, Valmeyer lost 4-3 at Valley Park. Trevor McClellan scored all three goals for the Pirates.
McClellan leads Valmeyer in scoring this season with 10 goals.
