Surprisingly, no serious injuries occurred when a car and truck collided head-on in the area of Route 3 and Old Red Bud Road south of Waterloo shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday.

Illinois State Police said a southbound black 2011 Mazda 3 driven by Patrick M. Davis, 24, of Waterloo, was trailing behind a tan colored car that had slowed to allow a vehicle in front of it to turn right onto Stonecrest Circle. Davis told police he had briefly looked away from the roadway and then realized the car in front of him had come to a near stop.

Davis veered off the roadway to the right and into the grass to avoid striking the tan car in front of it, but then lost control and came back out onto Route 3 ahead of the tan car and into the path of a northbound Dodge Ram 2500 truck driven by Gene T. Bailey III, 33, of Percy, which tried unsuccessfully to avoid a collision.

Davis was taken to Red Bud Regional Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Bailey was transported to St. Anthony’s Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts. Davis was cited for improper lane usage.

Route 3 was closed in both directions as police, fire and ambulance personnel handled the crash. The road was open to normal traffic a short time later.
