Valmeyer wins district tourney

The Valmeyer 1 Post 901 Junior American Legion baseball squad won three games in the searing heat over the weekend to capture the District 22 Tournament title at Borsch Park.

Valmeyer 1 opened tourney play against the younger Valmeyer 2 on Friday evening, winning 11-2.

Sam Fitzwilliam picked up the pitching win for Valmeyer 1, allowing just one run on one hit while striking out eight.

Kyren Miller took the loss for Valmeyer 2.

Riley McCarthy was the big gun offensively for Valmeyer 1, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs.

Jacob Rowold added two hits and two RBIs.

Evan Rowe-Brown had a single in a losing effort for Valmeyer 2.

On Saturday, Valmeyer 1 jumped out to an 8-1 lead after three innings against Worden, only to see the lead cut to 8-6 in the fifth. 

A two-run homer by McCarthy in the bottom of the sixth gave Valmeyer 1 a cushion and the team went on to win, 10-7.

McCarthy was 3-for-4 on the day with a double and single to go along with his homer and four RBIs.

Dustin Crawford  and Gibson Sippel added two hits and an RBI apiece.

Rowold picked up the pitching win in relief, allowing an unearned run over two and one-third innings.

Valmeyer 1 won the tourney with a thrilling 11-4 victory over top-seeded Bethalto on Sunday. 

The local squad trailed 3-0 after three innings as Valmeyer kicked the ball around an Bethalto capitalized with unearned runs.

Valmeyer rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the fourth courtesy of four hit batsmen and three hits. Henry Weber’s double scored one and Sippel followed with a two-run single. Rowold’s hit plated the fourth run of the inning.

Bethalto tied the game on a two-out bloop single to right in the fifth.

The score remained 4-4 into the seventh inning when Valmeyer exploded for seven runs.

Fitzwilliam started the rally with an infield single, which was followed by a McCarthy double, an intentional walk to Crawford and a fielder’s choice off the bat of Henry Weber, scoring one. 

Sippel drew a bases loaded walk to plate another and an infield error made it 7-4. John Fausz then came through with a solid single to right, plating two more. 

Rowold added a sacrifice fly and then Fausz hustled home on a wild pitch to finish the scoring.

Crawford pitched a complete game for Valmeyer, allowing just one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts.

Valmeyer 1 advances to the Fifth Division tourney in Breese, which begins Thursday.

Bethalto also advanced to Breese by beating Highland 1 in the loser’s bracket.

McCarthy was named MVP of the district tourney and his father, Valmeyer 1 head coach Mike McCarthy, earned the top manager award.

For the season, Valmeyer 1 is 13-5.

Rowold leads the team in hitting at .474 with 12 stolen bases and 19 runs. He is also 2-2 on the mound with a 2.86 ERA.

McCarthy, a left-handed hitting catcher, is batting .435 this summer with 18 RBIs and 21 runs.

Weber is hitting .408 with 13 RBIs.

Crawford is hitting .304 with seven RBIs and is 1-0 with a 2.63 ERA on the mound.

Sam Huebner leads the Valmeyer 1 pitching staff at 4-0 with a 2.30 ERA in 24 and one-third innings.

Sippel is 2-0 with a 3.25 ERA in 23 and two-thirds innings.
